626 Night Market

Check out our short vlog below!

So, let me tell you the behind the scenes scoop of what went down at the 626 Night Market and how I almost got sick from Stinky Tofu.

We got there around 6 pm after an hour drive and I quickly realized how big the venue was. It took us all night to check out all the booths once. Granted, it was extremely crowded and there were a few traffic jams. Because of the crowds, standing in line took a while too.

The first thing we did was stand in line for the tornado potato you saw in the video. That, by the way, was the most delicious potato I have ever had. Basically, they put a raw potato on a stick and run it through a machine that slices the potato to make the spiral shape. Then the potato is fried and powdered flavors are sprinkled to suit your individual taste buds. We had ketchup and ranch flavor. YUM.
We stood in line for half an hour for our tornado potato. (catchy name)

Next was the red bean bun, steamed/baked/made the traditional way and super fresh. Apparently we had ordered the last four buns before they stopped taking orders. The orders were backed up and we were to wait 40 min and come back to pick up our food. Was it worth it? Absolutely. We also ordered strawberry snow ice cream. This ice cream was on a spinning cylinder and the lady literally shaved the ice cream as it spun. It lived up to it's name: strawberry snow.

One of my missions for the night was to buy boba (or milk tea with tapioca pearls). Unfortunately for us, we stood in line for 40 min to be informed that they had run out of boba! ㅠ.ㅠ So instead, for the first time ever, I tried grass jelly (which by the way is not bad but I wanted some boba). The milk tea itself was delicious, as everything was, alhamdulilah.

All this time we walked around and got huge whiffs of stinky tofu. The map designates a stinky tofu zone. Did you get that? A stinky tofu ZONE. And it's highlighted in yellow-caution-tape color as a warning that screams 'DANGEROUS'. Maybe I should have gotten the small milk tea but ten minutes before leaving, I felt sick. The people, the smells, the lights, the heat, the cold, the wind, the trash, the food, everything was not helping and I just needed to find a restroom. To my luck, the nearest restrooms were right next to the stinky tofu zone and I was not risking it.  Instead, I left the venue and found that I could breath much easier away from the smells and the food. Fresh air was the best cure. Alhamdulilah, I had a great night and a great experience overall. ^^

I never actually ate stinky tofu but the smell was so strong that I couldn't brush the taste out of my mouth. If I think about it hard enough, I can still smell it. *shudder*
