For the longest time I always advised people to do what they love doing even if it means less money or doing something others might look down upon. I was once in an airplane on the way back from a trip and I overheard the two passengers behind me talking about teaching abroad saying that those who teach abroad do so because they are unable to find a local job. To sum it up, they stated that teachers teaching English abroad are incompetent and lazy.
Today, I wish I could talk to those people face to face.
I've never taught abroad but I have taught foreign languages and tutored English as a second language. All I can conclude from those experiences is that teaching a language is a great skill granted to a very select few. Alhamdulilah I enjoy teaching languages and I see it as a wonderful profession--I just wish others would see it that way too. Teaching makes me happy and I like being happy. Go figure.
Like the title of this post, I hope we can all use that hobby we are so passionate about and turn it into a business. Because doing what you like and loving what you do are rare treasures we should all be looking for.
Of course, money is always nice too. ;)
This might be the ultimate test that determines whether or not I follow my own advice and do what I want ignoring what other people may think.
P.S.
Do you know where the quote "Do what you like and love what you do" comes from? Bonus points!
